Charity Case “the people pleaser’s anthem.” I’ve always overextended myself to others and find it so difficult to break out of that habit. Making people happy at the expense of my mental health became part of my routine for so long. I wrote this song to cope with that. Charity Case offers a glimpse at what may be going on in your resident therapist friend’s mind; it’s a chance to finally tell our side of the story.
Lyrics
Yet again the oldest
Yet again the chosen
For a job that I never understood
I give away my body
There’s no time to say sorry
And at this rate
I don’t know if I should
Cause it’s my fate
That drags me by the hair
And it’s my shame
I’ll take with me everywhere
And I don’t know how to feel
Cause I never understood
What it means to be selfless
What it means to be good
Give me all your worries
I’ll carry the burdens
And I’ll ask you if you’ve eaten
How you’ve been
But I’m disassociating
I can’t heal, I don’t need saving
I’m a giver, and I fear I’ve given in
Cause it’s my fate
That drags me by the hair
And it’s my shame
I’ll take with me everywhere
And I don’t know how to feel
Cause I never understood
What it means to be selfless
What it means to be good
And I’m wrapped in tears and wire
But it’s better this way
I’ll caress you when you’re tired
But my hand feels out of place
And I say it doesn’t hurt me
I’m a charity case
But at least you feel safer
In my tangled up embrace
Cause it’s my fate
That drags me by the hair
And it’s my shame
I’ll take with me everywhere
And I don’t know how to feel
Cause I never understood
What it means to be selfless
What it means to be good
